Mark your calendars and get ready for the first-ever Los Angeles Bread Festival on June 6-7, a free, two-day celebration of the Southern Californian artisan bread renaissance hosted by Grand Central Market.

Curated by Grand Central Market creative director Joseph Shuldiner, who is also founder and director of the Institute of Domestic Technology, the Los Angeles Bread Festival will be an opportunity to experience the many flavors of L.A. bread through an assortment of pop-ups, workshops (including a community bread bake hosted by Autostrada), demonstrations, and moderated panel discussions such as “Field to Table,” an exploration of the L.A. bread movement from the perspective of local farmers, millers, bakers and chefs.

Hands-on family friendly activities will include “Feel the Churn Butter Aerobics,” a participatory butter-making/aerobic class, tortilla-making, sourdough starter 101 and more.

SATURDAY, June 6th

9am – 6pm: Pop-Up Bread Marketplace

10 – 11am: Grist & Toll flour milling demonstration

11am – 12pm: Tortilla Making demo and workshop with Chiles Secos

12pm – 1pm: Pan de Vida: A panel discussion exploring Southern California’s latino bread heritage and traditions moderated by Gustavo Areliano and including Sarah Jo Portnoy and Ricardo Cervantes.

1pm-2pm: Feel the Churn Butter Aerobics

2pm-3pm: Artisan Bread Baking at Home: Mark Stambler will talk and demonstrate how he makes his traditional, naturally levained loaves.

3 -4pm: Feel the Churn Butter Aerobics

7-8pm: Farm to Table: A moderated panel discussion exploring the L.A. bread movement from the perspective of its farmers, millers, bakers and chefs. Participants include Alex Weiser, Nan Kohler, Zack Hall & John Davis of La Brea Bakery Reserve Line Bread.

SUNDAY, June 7th

9am – 6pm: Pop-Up Bread Marketplace

10 -11am: Speakeasy Bread Bakers: No-knead bread making at home demo

11am – 12pm: Panel Discussion – Irregular Crumb: Unexplored Spaces in the New Bread Movement. Moderated by bread baker/activist Noah Wolf

Noon -2pm: Communal Bread Bake hosted by Autostrada & their mobile wood fired oven. Bring a loaf – Bake a loaf

2-3pm: Sourdough Wild-yeast Starter Hands-on Workshop instructed by Erik Knutzen

3 – 4pm: Mary Parr of Bread Culture will demonstrate her small batch bread
