Santa Monica Pier Whips up Butter Churning Holiday Action Dec. 14


LOS ANGELES – Only in Southern California can one combine artisanal butter churning, an 80’s fitness class, and the sweeping seaside view of the Santa Monica Pier to create the perfect handmade holiday gift. On Saturday, December 14, the Santa Monica Pier will host PopSoda artists Jimmy Fusil and Mike Wait and several unique vendors for a special holiday experience.

PopSoda will lead hundreds of participants in a delicious holiday workout that unites aerobics with butter making. An hour long workshop will encourage participants to shake and sweat with a 20 minute, 150 calorie workout to DJ spun fitness jams, learn the physics and chemistry of turning cream into butter, and strain, shape, and package the butter to keep or to ready as a gift. It’s the kind of holiday fun your great-great-great grandmother would have enjoyed.

Following each of the two classes, churners will be able to spread their butter creation on a slice of fresh bread made in an on-site oven courtesy of the MOMO project. Participants can complete their special gift by buying a hand-made card made from masters of letter press, Church of Type and complement the final present with a jar of artisanal jam from Laura Ann’s Jams.

In addition to the churning calisthenics and gift making, the Santa Monica Pier will have local online grocery service Good Eggs on hand to offer samples and, keeping with the dairy theme, bicycle-powered ice cream maker Peddler’s Creamery will have ice cream available. In addition, warm refreshments will be offered to participants as they finish off the fun by making their own gift tags.

The Butter Aerobics classes will be held at the West End of the Santa Monica Pier. Participation is limited to 150 people per class on a first-come basis. Butter cream is free to participants thanks to partner Alta Dena Dairy. Jars for butter churning are available to purchase onsite for $5 or BYOJ (between 12-18oz, plastic only please).

DATE: Saturday, December 14.

TIME: Two classes available: 10:30AM and 1:00PM (participants must arrive early to get signed in)

LOCATION: West end of the Santa Monica Pier

FEEL THE CHURN! TO PREMIERE IN NEW YORK AT THE RAUSCHENBERG PROJECT SPACE Special Three-Day Engagement, Part Of A Year-Long Series By Machine Project To Drive Cross-Coast Artistic Collaboration And Innovation

New York City Feel the Churn! is the second work in the year-long project by Los Angeles-based artist collective Machine Project at the Rauschenberg Project Space. Feel the Churn! is the only fitness system that allows you to make fat as you burn fat! Over 3 days, PopSoda will conduct another installment of their signature aerobics class and butter-making workshop. Jimmy Fusil will lead the sessions, teaching you how to shake your body and jars of fresh cream until you magically create delicious butter. Mike Wait will cut and mix a constant flow of fitness tunes and jock jams (including “Eat Your Fat”, PopSoda’s churning anthem). Feel the Churn’s goal is to spread the physical delight of artisan practices with a participatory audience, combining food science with music, exercise, performance, and community.

In the yearlong series, The Machine Project Field Guide to the Former Robert Rauschenberg Painting Storage Facility on 19th Street in Chelsea, Machine Project will cultivate new collaborative relationships between NYC artists, NYC grassroots art spaces, and Los Angeles artists. From September 2013-September 2014, projects developed during this period – including performances, lectures, workshops, and other participatory interventions – will be tested and work-shopped at both Machine Project and Robert Rauschenberg Project Space in preparation for our month-long show in September 2014. These occasional pop-up performances and interventions will map the potential and possibilities of these relationships and spaces, with a more in-depth presentation of the findings in September. The works presented will honor the legacy of Robert Rauschenberg, who sought to create social and cultural awareness through artistic collaboration and innovation.


For Feel the Churn!, White Cow Dairy from the Blue Hill Farm in East Otto, Cattaraugus County, will be providing cream harvested from a hand-picked herd of cows grazing on grasses, weeds, and wildflowers, and specially formulated to yield a peak workout-to-butter experience. Thanks to modern video technology, the very cows that yielded the cream will “watch on” as New Yorkers churn up good sweat and learn the elegant chemistry of butter making. http://www.whitecowdairy.com/

New York artist and surgeon Dr. Eric Finzi will participate in the Friday September 27 evening session, where he will create miniature radish sculptures and speak about his practices both medical and artistic. http://www.ericfinzi.com/

Los Angeles’ PopSoda is Jimmy Fusil and Mike Wait, from Paris and San Francisco respectively. Collaborating since 2009, they create genre-bending music that is fun, honest, thoughtful and new.

Machine Project is a nonprofit performance and installation space investigating art, technology, natural history, science, music, literature, and food. It presents events, workshops, and site-specific installations using hands-on engagement to make rarefied knowledge accessible. Beyond its storefront space, Machine Project operates as a loose confederacy of artists producing shows at locations ranging from the Santa Monica beach to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Machine Project was founded by Mark Allen and incorporated as an educational nonprofit in 2005.



The Rauschenberg Project Space is owned and used by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation to showcase unique aspects of Robert Rauschenberg’s legacy; to showcase the work of RRF grantees; or to create a linkage to its Captiva based Rauschenberg Residency. The foundation was established by Robert Rauschenberg to show how “art can change the world.” In this spirit, in addition to fostering the legacy of Rauschenberg’s art, the foundation takes as its mission to support wide-ranging philanthropic initiatives and artistic endeavors that are made in the fearless and innovative spirit with which Rauschenberg approached his own life and work.

4.25.13 Comida y Arte: Making Butter for Bread ($) but not Profit



We’ll be making butter at the opening of Art from the Ashes new group show/fund raiser, Comida y Arte. Come enjoy some food and art, while we raise funds for an awesome arts non-profit by making butter in a little tiny glassed in room for pledges.

You can also make a reservation to the pop-up paella parties being held as part of the exhibition on Friday and Saturday.
